Use your channel levels along with a frequency analyzer like PAZ or similar and you can A/B with and without your sub-bass to get a visual representation of what's happening as you mix in your low end. If you are sidechaining, you may want to experiment with how the Sub is chained, sometimes I find a mix gets locked in better if I have a steeper decay on the sub frequency sidechain. all on their own channels will give you a ton a flexibility when it comes to the mix down. All the character will be in your low-mid and higher ranges, you may want to start with a very simple sine as your sub bass to keep clashes to a minimum. This will leave you with just the low end and you won't be clashing with your mid-bass sounds.
